Need a Specific Phone Number?
Most people land here looking for one number, not for us. Here is where each kind of Louisiana number actually lives:
- City, town, and village numbers: see the Louisiana municipal and parish directory listings, or search the Louisiana Municipal Association directory, which carries a mailing address and a main phone line for its 306 member villages, towns, and cities
- State agency numbers: start with the Louisiana.gov agency directory or the city-by-city Louisiana State Government Telephone Directory, and if a listed number fails, state directory assistance answers at 225-342-6600 in Baton Rouge and 800-256-7777 statewide
- Parish clerk of court numbers: the Louisiana Clerks of Court Association directory holds a card for each parish with the clerk's name, address, phone, fax, and email, which is the route for land, marriage, and court filings
- School and university numbers: see the Louisiana school and campus directories, or call the Louisiana Department of Education line at 1-877-453-2721, open 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays with a callback inside 48 hours

- Birth and death certificates: go to the LDH Center for Vital Records and Statistics, at 628 N. 4th Street in Baton Rouge, mailing address P.O. Box 629, Baton Rouge, LA 70821-0629, fax 225-342-5568. Louisiana birth records stay confidential for 100 years after the birth year and death records for 50 years after the death year, so a phone call alone will not pull a private certificate without proof of eligibility and ID
- Public-records requests: requests fall under the Louisiana Public Records Act, La. R.S. 44:1 et seq., and go to the agency that holds the record. As one example, the Louisiana Office of the State Public Defender sends requests to its General Counsel through info@statepublicdefender.la.gov or 225-219-9305, at 301 Main Street, Suite 700, Baton Rouge

One caution about 311. It is not a statewide line in Louisiana. It works where a city pays for it, and the two strongest examples are New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Inside Orleans Parish you can dial 311 for non-emergency city services, or reach NOLA 311 at (504) 658-2299 or (504) 539-3266 from outside the parish. Baton Rouge routes its 311 and Public Works calls through 225-389-3090, with a TDD and after-hours dispatcher at 225-389-2070. Anywhere else in the state, use the town's main number from the municipal directory or the parish office instead.
