Why We Built This Site

Louisiana has no single switchboard. There is no one city hall for the whole state, and there are no counties here either. The state is split into 64 parishes, and each one runs its own offices. A person looking for a work number has to guess which level of government holds it first. That guess is where most searches go wrong.

The pieces do exist, they are just scattered. The Louisiana.gov agency directory lists state departments with an address, a main phone line, and a short note on what each one does. The Division of Administration Office of Technology Services publishes the Louisiana State Government Telephone Directory, which is organized city by city, so a state office in Monroe or Lake Charles is listed under that city rather than buried in an agency tree. If neither one has the number, state directory assistance answers at 225-342-6600 in Baton Rouge and 800-256-7777 from anywhere in the state.

Local numbers work differently. The Louisiana Municipal Association keeps a search that covers its 306 members, which breaks down to 127 villages, 111 towns, 66 cities, and 2 parishes, and each record shows a mailing address and a main phone line. For court, land, and marriage records, the Louisiana Clerks of Court Association directory holds a card for every parish clerk. Schools route through the Louisiana Department of Education call center and the Louisiana School Finder, while the State Library of Louisiana backs more than 340 parish libraries. Add the utilities, the six area codes serving the state, and the split between 911, 988, 211, and the handful of cities that answer 311, and the picture gets crowded fast. Sorting that pile is the whole job of this site.
